Bad Practices: |
Proper pond preparation between two cultures |
Suggestions Given: |
|
The water is treated with chlorine at 20 ppm-30 ppm and left for one week. The pond water is also treated with minerals and probiotic yeasts before stocking. |

Stocking: quality L. vannamei post-larvae pl12 – PL16 are procured from shrimp hatcheries after quality and PCR tests. |
Bad Practices: |
seed from unauthorised Hatchery |
Suggestions Given: |
|
The post-larvae are transported from hatcheries to culture ponds by road and air, and should only be stocked after a proper acclimatisation process. |

Good Practices: |
Fertilization and liming of the pond bottom
This will help in improving mineral content of the pond bottom especially in ponds with low soil fertility and ponds which are in culture for more than 10 years.
|
Bad Practices: |
Use a soil pH meter to test the soil pH. Soil should be wet while using the equipment. The levels of lime application during pond preparation depends on the pH of the soil. |
Suggestions Given: |
|
Apply dry vermicompost 250-1000kg/ha or compost manure
Spread the vermin compost/compost manure all along the pond bottom.
Do not use poultry manure or raw cow dung for fertilization

Farm Sanitation and hygiene
Area surrounding the farm should be kept clean, should have a toilet in good sanitary condition, located 20 to 30 m away from farm area. must avoid contamination of domestic sewage , avoid use of animal manure. |
Bad Practices: |
Provide the disinfect solutions like bleached water or KMnO4 in one container and plain water in another container at the entrance of each pond. |
Suggestions Given: |
|
Each pond should have a separate water sampling container. Farmers/workers should avoid getting in to ponds unless it is very necessary. |

PLs and Shrimp Health:The shrimp are swimming actively
Their morphology is normal
Their guts are full
They have no adhering organisms
There is no cloudiness in the muscle
|
Bad Practices: |
Procurement of Unauthorised Hatchery |
Suggestions Given: |
|
The muscle to gut width ratio is 3:1
The hepatopancreases are large and dark
The gill is white or greyish
There is no melanisation (shown by black to brownish spots)
There is no moulting residue on the shrimp heads
No cuts or twists on body |

Good Practices: |
Feed economics is around 50 to 60% of the operating cost. Feed should be fresh and of good quality not more than 90 days old from date of manufacture. |
Bad Practices: |
Reduce feeding during periods of low DO, plankton crash, rain fall, molting, extremes of temperature and during disease outbreaks. |
Suggestions Given: |
|
Slightly under feeding is better than over feeding. Never mix any antibiotics with the feed. It is preferable to switch off the aerators just before feeding until 2 hrs feeding, based on stocking density. |

Bad Practices: |
over feeding |
Suggestions Given: |
|
Select a good registered hatchery to procure specific pathogen-free (SPF) post larvae that. Hatcheries should be designed (or modified, in the case of existing hatcheries) to ensure good bio-security. |

Shrimp seed should be uniform in size and dark or light brown in colour, Seed with red, blue or green colour must be rejected. Shrimp seed should be strong and active. |
Bad Practices: |
Collect about 500PL from the bottom of the tank pour in a round tub. Stir the water. Wait for 1-2 minutes. If many seed concentrate in the centre then do not select that seed batch. |
Suggestions Given: |
|
Shrimp seed should pass a stress test for PCR test Salinity test, Formalin test and check for antibiotic residue test. |

Good Practices: |
prepare the right environment by providing enough micro and macro nutrients to help the shrimp undergo the formation of the new exoskeleton. This may help prevent moulting problems and mortalities due to failed moults. |
Bad Practices: |
Moulting allows shrimp to grow bigger |
Suggestions Given: |
|
Some of the beneficial minerals to help shrimp during moulting are: Ca, Cu, Mg, Na, P, K, Se, and Zn. |
